“Peace, be still!”
After teaching the crowds, Jesus told His disciples to cross to the other side of the sea. They took Him in the boat and began the journey across the water.
Jesus had been ministering to the people and, during the crossing, He rested in the stern of the boat.
A violent windstorm suddenly swept across the sea. Waves broke over the boat until it was filling with water.
Several disciples were experienced fishermen, yet the storm was severe enough that they believed they were in danger of perishing.
The disciples awakened Jesus in fear. Surrounded by wind, waves and darkness, they cried out to Him for help.
Their circumstances appeared overwhelming, but the One who was with them possessed authority greater than the storm.
Jesus arose and rebuked the wind. He spoke directly to the sea: “Peace, be still!”
The wind ceased and there was a great calm. The forces that terrified the disciples immediately submitted to His command.
The journey begins at the direction of Jesus Himself.
Powerful wind and waves threaten to overwhelm the boat.
Even experienced fishermen believe they are about to perish.
In their distress, the disciples awaken Jesus and cry out for help.
Jesus rebukes the wind and commands the sea to become still.
The disciples marvel that even the wind and the sea obey Him.
