Matthew records a great earthquake as an angel of the Lord descended from heaven, came to the tomb, rolled back the stone, and sat on it.
His appearance was like lightning, and the guards shook for fear and became like dead men.
Mary Magdalene came to the tomb early, while it was still dark, and saw that the stone had been taken away.
She immediately ran to Simon Peter and the other disciple with the alarming news that the Lord's body was no longer where it had been laid.
Peter and the other disciple ran toward the tomb. The other disciple arrived first, looked inside, and saw the linen cloths lying there.
Peter then entered the tomb and saw the burial cloths for himself.
Mary remained near the tomb weeping. Jesus appeared to her, but at first she did not recognize Him.
When Jesus spoke her name, she knew Him and responded, “Rabboni!”
