Moses and the Presence of God
Understanding why Moses refused to move forward without the presence of the Lord.
The Tabernacle: God's Pathway Into His Presence
“If Your Presence does not go with us, do not bring us up from here.”
Exodus 33:15 NKJV
Few statements in all of Scripture reveal the heart of a man like these words spoken by Moses. Israel had been promised a land flowing with milk and honey. They had witnessed miracles, deliverance, provision, and divine protection. Yet Moses understood something greater than blessings, victories, or possessions.
The greatest gift God could give His people was His presence.
The Tabernacle Was More Than Furniture
Many believers view the Tabernacle as an ancient structure filled with religious furniture. But God was revealing something much deeper.
Every piece of furniture, every sacrifice, every curtain, and every step inward pointed toward one destination: the presence of God.
The Tabernacle was a journey toward God.
The Outer Court — Sacrifice
The first thing encountered was the Altar of Sacrifice.
Sin had separated mankind from God. Before entering deeper into fellowship, there had to be atonement.
This altar pointed forward to Jesus Christ, the Lamb of God who would one day take away the sins of the world.
The Laver — Cleansing
After sacrifice came cleansing.
Priests washed before ministering before the Lord. God was teaching His people that holiness and purity matter when approaching Him.
Today believers experience this cleansing through the work of Christ and the washing of God's Word.
The Holy Place — Worship
Inside the Holy Place stood the Lampstand, the Table of Showbread, and the Altar of Incense.
These represented light, fellowship, prayer, worship, and ministry before the Lord.
Here we begin to see that God's desire was not merely forgiveness, but relationship.
The Most Holy Place — Presence
Beyond the veil stood the Ark of the Covenant.
This was the dwelling place of God's manifested presence among His people.
Everything in the Tabernacle pointed toward this place.
God's goal was never the furniture. God's goal was always His presence.
Why Moses Refused To Move Forward
Moses understood that a promised land without God's presence would be empty.
Success without God is failure. Blessing without God is poverty. Religion without God is lifeless.
Moses desired something greater than miracles. He desired the One who performed them.
“Show me Your glory.”
Exodus 33:18 NKJV
A Lesson For The Church Today
The modern Church can become occupied with programs, activities, and performance.
Yet the question remains:
Are we pursuing God's hand, or are we pursuing His presence?
Moses challenges every generation with a simple truth: Nothing can replace the presence of God.
